Assignment #7 (Good Times…)

I believe that the word-part project & the memoir provided students a wonderful and creative ne opportunity to express their individual tastes & interests.  It was an extremely creative & intuitive way of bringing out the creativity in the class.  The amount of “flexibility” & creativity we were given absolutely made the projects a delight!  It was enjoyable & creative, not boring & painstaking like other projects.

The Writer’s Workshops were filled with hilarious fun & I enjoyed every minute of it!  It was a blast being to collaborate & share each other’s ideas on the individual Piece Projects.  I possibly can’t think of a single recommendation for the two projects.  It all just came together so professionally.

Assignment #6-Symbols in The Great Gatsby

In The Great Gatsby, there are various symbols that are evident within the plot of the novel.  One of these important symbol’s is the green light that is present at the end of Daisy’s dock.  At the beginning of the novel, the reader observes Nick Carraway, the protagonist & narrator of the story, observing the shadowy and enigmatic character known as Jay Gatsby.

Nick often observes Gatsby observing a mysterious green light present at the end of her deck. For Gatsby, this light represents the epitome of his passion.  It represents his longing for the woman he loves and met five years ago.  Gatsby is seen stretching his hand toward the green light far across Long Island.  It is obvious that Gatsby longs for Daisy Buchanan.

There has been some skepticism about the symbolism of the green light in the novel.  Some interpreters claim the light represents the American dream or wealth (hence the green-colored reflection).  However, I believe it represents all that Jay Gastsby has in the world, his one and only passion for residing in his googillion dollar mansion.  It’s all for the love of one woman.

Assignment #5

The media is everywhere.  All across the globe the media’s influence is ever rising & ever dominant over local perceptions on various topics.  More & adults (especially young adults & children) are being persuaded by local media groups to undergo physical & oftentimes mental lifestyles changes to their body that could very well be harmful & health-crippling.

“To be or not to be” is the essential question in this scenario, how are individuals supposed to react tho these media advertisements & lifestyle suggestions?  Where do you start?  Who do you talk to, and so forth?  First of all, before undergoing any extreme nutritional change, it is always best to consult a doctor.  doctors know what’s right for your body & mind, not the media.  Don’t be suckered in by false promises of beauty & masculinity.  Find your own way to get fit, don’t follow the crowd.

It seems that nowadays the media’s influence is inescapable.  Children are persuaded by toys in lunch meals as well as goodies & other treats while body-building affiliates & acne-prevention creme companies drill the “perfect model” of the human body.  Why does the media resort to such advertising strategies.  Most likely, the majority of them wish to suck your hard-earned cash from your wallet.  However, are there some companies who truly wish to entice the population to make good choices?  Of course there are.  After all, there is some good within all this evil.

Many affiliates and name brand companies are encouraging us to make healthy lifestyle choices & develop our overall fitness.  They encouraging kids to remain active in the outdoors, join a club, play sports, & so forth.  Adults are being recommended to talk to their children about their weight-loss goals, fitness achievements, & even the practice of abstinence.

Assignment #3- “Pencil Face

To start of this blog I would like to state that I hope I never run into any gigantic madman-smile pencils in my lifetime.  If I could have a pencil like that (you would have to force me to) I would probably draw a wood chipper to toss that demonic spawn of the devil right into to its eminent death!

Well, on a serious note, if I was given the opportunity to materialize any from of object like that I would draw…gosh, I don’t even know what I would draw.  There are so many things to ask for that I can’t even decide!  I would probably start off with something that would benefit those around me.  Something the entire world could benefit from.  Not some object like a cake or a kite like the spoiled girl did in the vide0.  I could try and draw a cure for cancer or some other long sought-after remedy.

On the issue of the video’s mood, I must say the creators conducted themselves very professionally in establishing a creepy & eerie mood for the video.  The bell chime music also established a sense of eerie danger & disturbance.  The moral of the story is definitely this:  Be happy with what you have & don’t be greedy or else you will be sucked into a spasmodically appearing space anomaly in time which will take you to your doom.

Here Is One Good Pencil Face Alternative. Creepy Smile Not Included.

Assignment #2-Sorting People

Wow!  Only eight correct?  Boy, it sure does reveal to you just how misleading racial profiling is don’t you think?  Is truly a shame that even the individuals who believe that they do not possess any qualities of racial discrimination indeed do.  Nonetheless, it opens up some possibilities by learning about our racial tendencies.  By understanding our fellow citizens’ ethnicity and backgrounds, we can gain a better understanding of our own ethnicity.

Overall, it was a unique experience to be able to actually test our ability of identification and to see where we can improve.  But the true moral is this:  Don’t judge a book by its cover!

Enticed by Greed- My Response to McTeague

Polk Street: A bustling and modern metropolis harboring one of the most skilled and intellectually slow dentists in California.  His name is McTeague.

McTeague is the ironic and brutal story of the dentist and new wife Trina.  Enticed by the hands greed and lack of happiness around them; the couple slowly degrades into insanity and miserliness.  Frank Norris (the author of the title) crafts a genius story of the horrors of the human soul when corrupted by desire and false affections.  Stripped from everyone they love, the McTeague couple soon learns the true values of love and passion; far too late.

FUN FACT:  The cover picture of the novel is taken from the silent film adaptation of the novel created by Austrian filmmaker Erich von Stroheim in 1924.

The Balance of Love & War- My thoughts on A Farewell to Arms

Ernest Hemingway’s tragic tale of an American lieutenant fighting in the Italian army during World War I is a tragic and heartrending one.  Through Frederic Henry’s narration, the reader witnesses the tragic consequences and aftershocks of a global war blended with the bittersweet tone of love.  As the tale progresses, all is stripped from Henry’s very existence; the war, his life, and even his love, Catherine Barkley.

A Farewell to Arms certainly is a solemn novel of two lovers fighting in a passionate and romantic struggle on the Italian front while learning to cope with the horrors and injustices that war brings upon humanity.  It is a read that will leave you with many questions, all of which are entwined in the love and desire that the two fateful lovers have come to know.

-Two Buds on a Raft- My Thoughts on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Well today I have succeeded in finishing Mark Twain’s timely classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and I a must say it was quite a humorous and enjoyable ride (raft ride that is) and that I greatly appreciated the moral values Mr. Twain expressed in the novel.  As the reader delves deeper and deeper into the racial tensions of the novel, we witness the main character, Huck, blossom forth in upright maturity and learns to follow his heart rather than the ideals of others.

Of course the novel isn’t without it’s humor.  Humorous escapades involve the duke and dauphin who morally defy all forms of scandalous thievery.  These two scumbags really are the lowest of the low.  The book also featured the return of Huck Finn’s loyal (and foolish) friend, Tom Sawyer.  In the end, The Adventures of Hucklberry Finn was a great read for the Summer Reading Assignments and I believe that this novel’s in-school discussion will be a spirited one!  Now let’s work on those questions!

-From The Ashes-My Thoughts on Fahrenheit 451

As an exciting adrenaline-induced thrill ride from start to finish.  I found Fahrenheit 451 to be one enjoyable ride to the very end!  The novel truly symbolizes the essence of the Phoenix: Rebirth and resurrection, while harmoniously flowing with mankind’s deep desire to return from the ashes of their own destruction and rise once again, shining even brighter than previously thought possible.  Well done Mr. Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 truly is a classic to be cherished!
